The VillageThe Balneario
Nowadays, the Balneario is waiting for rehabilitation and re-opening. It is probably the most important site of the region thanks to the fame of its thermal waters known for a long time through the existence of so called safe-conduct conceded to the Maures to let them take “the bath of Aigues” during the 15th century. For ages, various buildings came to life as part of the Balneario within the very same area..
The ownership of such buildings has gone from hand to hand. The first paper mentioning the Balneario is dated November 30th 1596 and attributes the ownership of the waters of Aigues to Alicante. This will remain untouched until 1816. From that date on, a dispute about the ownership will debut between the family of the Marquises de Bosh (also Conde de Casas Rojas) and the Town Hall of the city of Alicante. The different will end in 1865 whereby the judge of Jijona will designate for good the Conde de Casas Rojas as legal owner of the Baths.
